Jack Palance and Burl Ives star as characters with opposing view points about ex-slaves in the post civil war south. Ives is the sympathetic ex-slavemaster, McMaster, who gives half ownership of his ranch to Benji, his former slave. Palance is an ex-rebel soldier bent on persecuting Benji until he gives up his land.
