The
Appeal of Troma | The
Soul of Troma Many Troma classics are written, produced, and directed by the Troma Team, led by Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, including such films as TERROR FIRMER, TROMEO & JULIET, and the world famous TOXIC AVENGER series. In addition, Troma acts as distributor for independent movies that larger studios would not handle without seriously compromising the film's integrity, such as Dario Argento's THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, and Trey Parker and Matt Stone's pre-South Park feature, CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL. In its thirty year history, Troma Entertainment has succeeded as one of the most active and fiercely independent film studios. One-of-a-kind films such as The Toxic Avenger series, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, and Tromeo and Juliet have made Troma, an entertainment brand name. Critical appreciation has accelerated the world over, with retrospectives sponsored by the Cinematheque Francaise, British Film Institute and the American Film Institute, among others. In the early nineteen-seventies, Yale friends and Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz began producing tightly budgeted films of a content and spirit not seen in Hollywood studio productions, in addition to acquiring films from outside sources. Primarily aimed at the largest segment of the movie going audience (ages 16-35), all the films were distributed globally. By offering the public a viably exhilarating alternative to Hollywood, Troma has since grown steadily, expanding into home video distribution with Troma Team Video, distribution of mainstream film fare with 50th Street Films, and now onto the internet. The Troma film library includes over eight-hundred company owned titles in an impressively eclectic span of genres horror, action, sci-fi, comedy, drama, children's and is growing constantly. From Kevin Costner to Dustin Hoffman to Bela Lugosi to Toxie, stars abound in Troma movies, Troma continues to be a haven for independent filmmakers and new young talent and has clearly become the independents independent film studio.
